Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member of the Parliament’s Privileges and Ethics Committee, Kanditheemu Constituency MP Ameen Faisal, said on Saturday that the arrest of Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir during a fishermen’s protest may have breached parliamentary privileges.

Mauroof was arrested on Thursday while leading a protest by fishermen. Video footage circulated on social media showed him being restrained and taken into custody while on a fishing vessel. He was remanded in custody for five days on Friday.

Police have charged Mauroof with obstructing sea navigation, damaging a Coast Guard vessel, and obstructing police duty.

Following the arrest, the Parliament’s Privileges and Ethics Committee convened a meeting on Thursday night. Ameen said another meeting is expected to be held either on Saturday night or Sunday night to discuss proposals related to the case.

The committee is also assessing whether sufficient members are available to meet quorum requirements in order to proceed with any decisions. Ameen said that, so far, only one member from the People’s National Congress (PNC) has been invited to attend the committee meeting in addition to himself.

Speaking to Atoll Times, Ameen said he does not believe Mauroof was arrested in connection with a criminal offence. He said the arrest raises concerns over the treatment of a sitting member of parliament and may contravene parliamentary privileges.

Ameen also said that while in custody, Mauroof does not enjoy the same rights afforded to members of the public.
