Better to reclaim Maafushi lagoon over Rasmalé for housing, Solih says

Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Sunday that the Rasmalé reclamation project is not a solution to the housing issue and suggested that land reclamation near K. Maafushi would be a better option.

Solih made the remarks during the launch of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) manifesto for the Malé City council elections. The event was held at Artificial Beach in Malé.

Speaking at the event, Solih said his administration had adopted a plan to address the housing issue by reclaiming land in areas close to the capital.

According to him, the previous government had planned reclamation projects in Gulhifalhu, Giraavarufalhu and Uthuru Thila Falhu.

He said these areas were selected because they could be connected to Malé through bridges across the Rasfari Lagoon.

Solih said the projects were halted after President Mohamed Muizzu took office and that the current administration had instead prioritised reclamation of Rasmalé.

“It would be better to reclaim land from the Maafushi lagoon nearby. People would move there as there is economic activity in the area,” Solih said.

He added that development of Ras Malé would take a long time.

“Ras Malé may become a place to live in 30 to 40 years. I do not see that happening earlier,” he said.
