Speaker Mohammed Nasheed said on Wednesday that the confidence reposed by lawmakers in him changes from week to week and that he is now waiting to see the confidence results next week.
Nasheed addressed political instability in the country while speaking at the opening ceremony of the Brain and Spine Conference 2023 at Villa Nautica resort. Nasheed said the current transitional period is very unusual.
"We are in transit. There is a president-elect, he may not yet be available to attend ceremonies such as this. Then there is an outgoing president, so he cannot attend such a ceremony," Nasheed said.
"Then I am the only person left. However, unfortunately, there is a question about the confidence in me as well."
Nasheed was referring to the no-confidence motion filed by the MDP against him.
The MDP first filed the case in June last year. But, after the first round of the presidential election, the case was withdrawn. After the defeat in the second round, the no-confidence motion was tabled for a second time.
"Last week [they] didn't trust me. The next week they had confidence. Now they don't trust me again," Nasheed said.
"I'm waiting to see what happens next week."
Nasheed summed up his speech indicating a quote from former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.
"A week is a long time in politics. Thank you," he said.
