The first school of Hulhumale Phase 2 opened on Sunday, bringing relief to a large population that is already inhabited there.

Kaamil Didi Primary School can accommodate 826 children. The first batches at Kaamil Didi Primary School were formerly attending Huravee School, Ghaazee School and Rehendhi School in Phase 1. Not having to travel across towns daily for school is a huge relief for many residents of Phase 2.

At the opening ceremony, education minister Dr Aishath Ali highlighted this matter too. She said that the school will bring great convenience to the people living in Hulhumale' Phase 2, as they would not need to travel far for school daily, and the parents who dreaded sending their children off to school alone on buses can now watch their child enter the school premises from the balcony of their homes.

“I can assure you that we will be second parents to your children here,  and shall prepare them  well for secondary grades”, she said.

Vice President Faisal Naseem inaugurated the Kaamil Didi Primary School, which honours the country's first education minister Ahmed Kamil Didi.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, education minister also asserted that the motive behind naming schools in honour of national icons was to make an example of their lives. She referred to the motto of the school and said that reading and writing were favourite pastimes of the deceased national leader.

“It is my hope that the children of this school will also develop a love for knowledge and become beacons for awareness in the future," she said.

The school:

  • will offer classes from Lower Kindergarten (LKG) to grade 6

  • classes are to be conducted in two sessions

  • has a capacity of 824 students and 47 teachers.

  • will have a total of 65 employees, including eight administrative staff and 10 workers.

Kaamil Didi Primary School was developed on the vacant land in front of Hiyaa towers 3 and 4. The school will provide easy access to education for families who have moved to the Hiyaa flats.

The project to construct Kaamil Didi Primary School was awarded to SJ Construction Private Limited and the project was launched on April 1 this year. The school has a total of 24 classrooms.

The principal of Kaamil Didi Primary School is Fathmath Leena, an expert in the field of education.

The education minister said that the adjacent preschool to Kaamil Didi Primary School will also be opened this year. She added Salahuddin School in Hulhumale Phase 2 will also be opened for the second term of the academic year and will offer classes from Lower Kindergarten (LKG) to grade 10.
