Maldives FM hails 'new golden chapter' of relations with Türkiye

President Muizzu is making his first official visit overseas to Türkiye from Sunday to Wednesday.

President Mohamed Muizzu's ongoing visit to Türkiye marks the beginning of a new golden chapter of Maldives' engagement and collaboration with Türkiye, Maldivian foreign minister Moosa Zameer said Monday.

President Muizzu, accompanied by First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed, and a high-level ministerial delegation, is making his first official visit overseas to Türkiye from Sunday to Wednesday.

President Muizzu, who took the oath of office on November 17, and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held official talks Monday evening at the Presidential Palace in Ankara.

Following the talks, Zameer said on X that the two presidents discussed the increasing engagement between the Maldives and Türkiye at various levels, and on-going collaboration and avenues for future cooperation in a number of areas, including tourism, trade, investments and counterterrorism.

"Confident that this is the beginning of a new golden chapter of Maldives' engagement and collaboration with Türkiye," the minister, who is accompanying the president on his Turkish visit, said.

The president will return to the Maldives after attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28), to be held in the United Arab Emirates on November 30.
