The Elections Commission (EC) on Wednesday allowed former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who quit his own Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) last week, to form a new political party called People's National Front (PNF).
The EC approved the formation of the PNF in the name of Yameen's son Zein Abdullah Yameen.
Although the party was formed under Zein's name, there will be eight founders of the PNF, including him, and at Yameen's request. They are:
-
1-
Yameen
-
2-
Yameen’s son Zein Abdullah Yameen
-
3-
Yameen’s top lawyer, Dr Mohamed Jameel
-
4-
Former police commissioner Hussain Waheed
-
5-
Former PPM treasurer Ahmed Mustafa
-
6-
Former MIFCO managing director Adli Ismail
-
7-
Dr Ibrahim Jihad
-
8-
Ali Adam
At Wednesday’s meeting, the EC also handed over the permission to form the party to some of the unofficial founders.
The PNF must reach 3,000 signatures within three months from the date of formation.
The party's leaders have assured that the party will be registered very soon after receiving the permission.
After Yameen announced last Thursday that he was working on forming a new party, the party's name, charter and logo were announced on the same day. The party's name was announced on Saturday night.
The PNF is led by Yameen’s senior lawyer, Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed and former communications minister Mohamed Maleeh Jamal.
