The opposition main political party Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed concern that President Mohammed Muizzu has failed to hand over the flat registry within two weeks of him coming to power, as he had promised.
The President said on the 2nd of this month that the ownership papers will be handed over by the end of this week to all those whose names are on the final list of flat and land recipients under the Binnveriya and Gedhoruveriya scheme of the recent MDP government.
On Thursday, the last working day of this week, the MDP issued a statement expressing concern.
The MDP said in their statement that the government has not made any efforts to hand over the flats to date. The statement said the party is receiving concerns that complaints have been submitted to the relevant institutions but they have not responded.
“The people are concerned that President Dr Muizzu has been talking about flats in various ways after taking office, contrary to his promises to the people during the presidential election campaign,” the statement said.
The statement called to begin the process of handing over allotted plots and flats to beneficiaries of the former government's Binnveriya and Gedhoruveriya Scheme ‘this very instant’.
The ACC has ordered the suspension of all activities related to the handover of the flats as the permanent list of flat recipients had been released a day before President Muizzu was sworn in.
According to the letter sent by the ACC to the ministry, the ACC investigation revealed that errors had been made in the handover of the flats. Thus:
-
Those who are not eligible for the flat have been declared eligible and given points
-
Points were given to some persons in violation of the rules prescribed for evaluation of forms
