Male City Council Mayor-elect Adam Azim has requested the government to put on hold the implementation of the decision to hand over major projects planned by the City Council to the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure.
Deputy Mayor Ahmed Nareesh moved to hand over the implementation of the MVR 120 million projects to the Construction Ministry.
Following the decision, Adam Azim, who won the mayoral seat in last Saturday's by-election, has asked the council to postpone the implementation of the decision until he takes over as mayor.
Azim said in a post on 'X' that the people have clearly stated how things should be done in the city. Conversely, it is unacceptable for the current ministers of the President's Office to enter council meetings and make decisions, he said.
“I call on the government to stop the attempts of the ministers of the President's Office to take over the work of the city council, contrary to the provisions of Chapter 8 of the Constitution and the Decentralization Act,” Azim said.
The city council has decided to transfer 11 projects to the Construction Ministry within six months. These are projects worth MVR 120 million.
