The People's National Front (PNF), founder by former president Abdulla Yameen has submitted membership forms to the Election Commission for registration.

Three months after the Election Commission approved the formation of the party, the PNF submitted 3,000 forms to the commission on Tuesday. The Election Commission approved the party's formation on 29 last month. However, the submission of forms was delayed for various reasons.

Former Youth Minister Maleeh Jamal said 3,200 forms have been submitted to the commission so far. The reason is to seek permission to hold the party council sit-down as soon as possible to complete the verification process, he said.

“The hope is that we will be allowed to hold the meeting as soon as possible,” he said.

Although about 3,000 forms have been submitted so far, the party still has a large number of forms, he said. However, Maleeh did not say how much.

Yameen announced his decision to quit PPM and form a new party on November 23, following a rift between incumbent President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Thus:

  • Yameen applied for permission to register a new party under the name PNF on November 26. The Election Commission granted permission to the party to reach the required 3,000 members and carry out party formation activities on November 29, three days later

  • The party's founders have previously said they will reach 3,000 members within 24 hours

  • When asked about the delay in submitting the forms, the party said it would submit the forms at the best time depending on the political situation

  • And then, it said the party would apply for registration after Yameen's release
