The 20th Parliamentary elections will be held on April 21, the Elections Commission announced on Thursday evening

The parliamentary elections were previously scheduled for March 17.

The Election Commission has decided to conduct polling in the parliamentary elections on Sunday, April 21 from 8 am to 4 pm. Counting of votes will begin at 4:30 on the voting day.

The Election Commission has fixed a new date for the parliamentary elections after President Mohammed Muizzu on Thursday finally relented under the advise of the Attorney General to ratify the amendment to the General Elections Act to prevent any elections during the month of Ramadan.

The first time the bill was sent to parliament, the President refused to ratify it and sent it back. However, the parliament passed the bill for the second time overriding the presidential veto.

The President approved the bill on Thursday evening with the advice of the Attorney General.
