President Mohammed Muizzu has hit back at his predecessor President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih, saying that being president for five years is not a license to lie.

The President was speaking at a parliamentary campaign event for the ruling PNC candidate for the Maafannu West constituency.

Referring to Solih, the President said he is going to the people now to ask them to give him another opportunity in the parliamentary elections to do things that he has not been able to do in the last five years of his regime. The MDP already has a majority in parliament and is obstructing the government from doing things and then lying on top of it, Muizzu said.

Alleging that the previous government had committed irregularities in allotment of plots and flats, he said that false rumours are being spread by the opposition that this government is making a separate list for allotment of plots and flats.

Insisting that such a list would not be made, the President said the land and flats would be handed over very soon.

"Being able to be president for five years is not a licence to lie as you wish. It's not a licence for it, it's not a justification. It should be more honest. You have to be honest. When you stand in front of the people and speak, you have to speak truthfully. Anyone can deceive or lie," he said, adding that one has to remember that there is someone (God) who cannot be deceived.

Recently, at a MDP parliamentary campaign rally, former President Solih said that the government is not able to give away the flats as they wish because the MDP still has a parliamentary majority.

Responding to the allegations, President Muizzu said that the distribution of flats and land to a separate list was done by the Solih government. Whether the forms were submitted or not, Muizzu alleged that a separate list was made in the President's Office and land and flats were given.

The President added:

  • The flats and land will be handed over in accordance with the list in the gazette

  • The government will not confiscate any of the land or flats
