The opposition is unable to digest the fact that the economy is stabilising, President Mohammed Muizzu said on Sunday evening.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the campaign of Mohamed Fazeel, who is contesting for G.A.Dhaandhoo constituency in the upcoming parliamentary elections, President Muizzu said that efforts to bring life to the economy without printing money have started to show results.

He said that Maldives' debts are being paid on time. He also said he’d paid a loan on the 19th of this month, but he did not elaborate on it.

"We are working to revive the economy. The debt of MVR 120 billion is being paid on the due dates," he said.

"Most recently it was in this month, today is the 31st. We paid the loan due on the 19th of this month and the foreign debt on time. We paid the debt before that on time as well”.

The President said that on top of reviving the economy without printing more money, he has paid all the due salaries while even restarting the halted projects across the atolls.

"The projects were stopped because they were started and not paid. We are not printing money, we are organising funds, redistributing it to companies, paying money for pending bills and mobilising them to start projects in rural areas," he said.

President Muizzu said MTCC, one of the largest infrastructure contributors in Maldives, has not been able to get fuel. He said he has resolved the fuel shortage and that the stalled projects are being resumed now.

"But we are not printing money. It is a relief for the people that we are not printing money. There is hope that the economy will come to life," he said.

"So, we are now moving in the right direction on the right path. When we go in this direction, the people are empowered. The people are prosperous. The country is revived," he said.

"Investors who will invest in the country are getting confidence. They [the opposition] are unable to digest it”.

The President called on the people not to respond to the opposition's efforts to deviate the country from its right direction.

"This country should not be run according to what foreigners say and what the ambassador of the nearest embassy says. The people of Maldives have made that a thing of the past," he said.
