The Election Commission has announced the final results of Sunday's parliamentary elections.
The final results were announced at the election centre in Dharubaaruge.
There is no difference between permanent and temporary results. According to the permanent results:
-
PNC: 66 seats
-
MDP: 12 seats
-
Independent: 11 seats
-
MDA: 2 seats
-
JP: 1 seat
-
MNP: 1 seat
The PNC won 66 seats out of the 90 constituencies it contested in the elections, but it will have 73 members in the 20th Majlis. Seven independently elected members have signed up for the party in the past two days.
As a result, the PNC has a super majority in the 20th parliament with a total of 73 members. Additionally, the governmental coalition will have a total of 77 members, including the seats won by other pro-government parties.
Such a large majority would grant the power for PNC to amend the Constitution without the support of other members of parliament.
