Members appointed to parliamentary standing committees

In the committee meetings held so far, PNC members have been appointed as the chairman and vice-chairman of all the committees except Gasim.

The People’s Majlis on Monday approved the appointment of members to the standing committees.

The 20th Parliament has 17 standing committees. The members of the 17 committees were appointed at Monday's session.

After considering the representation of political parties and Independent members in the Parliament and consulting with parliamentary groups, the motion was passed by 88 votes.

The ruling main party, the PNC, has a super majority in the 20th parliament and so has full majority in all committees. However, the committees are composed of at least one MDP member on each committee.

Composition of some key committees:

  • Security Services Committee - The committee has 13 members, including eight from the PNC, and one each from MDP, MDA, JP, MNP and one Independent member

  • Government Oversight Committee - The 11-member committee includes eight PNC members, two MDP members and one MDA member

  • Judiciary Committee - The committee has 11 members; nine PNC members and two MDP members

  • Independent Institutions Committee - The committee has 11 members; nine from the PNC and one each from the MDP and MNP

  • Economic Affairs Committee - The committee has 11 members; seven PNC members, three MDP members and one MDA member

  • Public Accounts Committee - The committee has 11 members; eight PNC members, two MDP members and one JP member

  • Committee on State-Owned Enterprises - which has 11 members in total, includes eight PNC members, two MDP members and one MNP member

Riza to represent Majlis at JSC

The Parliament also approved the appointment of PNC Member Hussain Riza Adam as the parliament’s member at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

No other name was submitted to the Parliament for appointment to the post. Therefore, Hussain Riza was appointed to the post by 83 votes.

Abdul Raheem Abdullah will also sit on the JSC as the Speaker of the Parliament. However, he has not yet been officially appointed to the commission.

Committee Chairs and Vice-Chairs

The Parliament also approved the appointment of Ahmed Saleem (Red Wave Saleem) as the chairman of the 241 committees on National Security Services while appointing Gasim Ibrahim, JP’s Maamigili MP as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.

In the committee meetings held so far, PNC members have been appointed as the chairman and vice-chairman of all the committees except Gasim. 

Some of the notable other committees that have appointed chairpersons now are:

  • Judiciary Committee: Manadhoo PNC MP Husni Mubarak as Chairman and Huraa MP Dr Anara Naeem as Vice-Chairman

  • State Owned Enterprises (SOE) Committee: Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau, Feydhoo South MP Ibrahim Didi as Vice-Chairman

  • Decentralization Committee: Mahchangolhi Central Constituency MP, former Male City Council Member Ahmed Zameer, and Villufushi MP Hassan Waheed as Vice-Chairman

  • Economic Affairs Committee: Fuvahmulah Central MP Ali Fazad as Chairman and Thinadhoo North MP Saudhullah Hilmy as Vice-Chairman

  • General Committee: Hulhudhoo MP Mohammed Shahid, and Holhudhoo MP Abdul Sattar Mohammed as Vice-Chairman.
