226-cycle parking zone at old Huravi Building lot
The Huravi Building, one of the first three-storey buildings in the Maldives, was demolished in May.
After demolishing the Huravi Building, which is associated with the memories of the entire lives of thousands of government employees, a cycle parking zone is being set up on the land on which it stood.
The Huravi Building, one of the first three-storey buildings in the Maldives, was demolished in May, several years after the 35-year-old building began collapsing and the condition was too bad to be used. The government's plan is to create a parking zone and a park where the building stood.
The Male City Council is constructing a parking zone at the site.
Mayor Mohamed Muizzu said in a tweet that work is underway to paint the parking zone. He said 226 motorcycles can be parked there.
Council spokeswoman Mariam Shiuna said the parking zone would open to the public as soon as it was completed.
Huravi Building is the government's second office building opened during former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's second term. With so many government offices under one roof, it was much easier at that time and services were faster.
