Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has invested $18 million (MVR 277.6 million) to install additional elevators in the second phase of the Hulhumalé Hiyaa flats.
The project is part of the government’s efforts to improve accessibility and infrastructure in the densely populated Hiyaa housing towers.
A total of MVR 200 million has been allocated in the state budget for the installation of the additional elevators in the Hiyaa flats. The initiative was a key presidential campaign promise by President Mohamed Muizzu, aimed at addressing accessibility challenges faced by residents.
China’s Shenyang Yuan Intellectual Group has been contracted to handle the project. Practical work began in April this year, and the project is expected to be completed within one year.
HDC’s Managing Director, Fazul Rasheed, revealed that $18 million has been spent on purchasing 32 new elevators, which will be installed across the 16 towers of the Hiyaa flats. Each tower will receive two new elevators—one passenger lift and one stretcher lift—to enhance convenience and safety for residents.
However, Fazul did not disclose the cost of the installation process.
