The emergency motion moved by the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) in Parliament on Monday was thrown out due to the absence of the party's member that submitted the motion, Maradhoo MP Ahmed Didi.
An emergency motion is taken up in the morning session before going to the items on the agenda of the day. However, when the Speaker of the Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdullah granted the opportunity, MP Ahmed Didi was not in session.
"The member who moved the emergency motion [Ahmed Didi] is not in the parliament. We cannot proceed with the emergency motion at this time. Therefore, we will proceed with the agenda," Abdul Raheem said.
The MDP parliamentary group’s spokesperson, Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, said in an X post that MP Ahmed Didi was unable to attend the session due to sudden illness.
It is unclear exactly what the emergency motion was on. However, it is believed that the emergency motion was filed in connection with the ongoing protest by the fishermen in Addu.
On Sunday, the MDP parliamentary group held a press conference on the issue of non-payment of fishermen. The meeting, which was also attended by Ahmed Didi, said MDP would try to raise these concerns through parliament.
