The 38 year old was receiving treatment in privately run ADK hospital for high fever since returning from Hajj pilgrimage two days ago.
Baka was reportedly on ventilator because he had breathing difficulties.
Baka remains one of the finest defensive midfield players to emerge from the archipelago.
He played in integral role in Maldives' SAFF championship win in 2008 and in 2018. He is the one of two players to win the much coveted trophy twice.
There has been major outpour of condolences especially on social media by the public including the president and parliament speaker.
