Housing Minister Dr Ali Haidar has said that the final list of the Gedhoruveriya scheme launched by the previous government to provide flats to the residents of Male will be released by October after the review by the current government.

A permanent list of recipients of flats under the Gedhoruveriya scheme of the previous MDP government was gazetted at the end of its term.

The term expired after an agreement was signed with some of the recipients.

However, after a large number of people complained about the permanent list, the ACC launched an investigation and found that 59.6% of the forms examined were ineligible.

Haidar told the Parliamentary Petitions Committee that a final list would be released after re-reviewing the current list by the time the first towers of the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme are completed.

"As far as I know, the first six of the 32 towers will be completed by the end of October. Hopefully we will release the final list by then," he said.

The government has decided to revise the permanent list gazetted by the previous government without any additions.

In Monday's committee, Haidar said the list would not be cancelled but would be reviewed. It will, he said, be based on available evidence.

"I think the assessment of living conditions is the area where fraud is most likely to come. We will look at it based on official information available in other ways," Haidar said.

A report has been prepared on the complaints submitted by the public to the National Development and Heritage Committee of the Parliament.

The committee noted three main points in the report:

  • There has been a delay in handing over the flats allotted by the Gedhoruveriya scheme

  • There is public concern about the delay in handing over the flats

  • The President promised to hand over the flats to the recipients of the flats scheduled to be allocated under the scheme

On March 27, the committee's decision to expedite allotment of flats without altering the list as promised by the President was passed by the Parliament.

Despite the Parliament’s decision, Presidential Spokesperson Heena Waleed had said that the flats would be given after considering the issues highlighted in the ACC report.
