The island council of HA. Hoarafushi has announced plans to file a lawsuit against Fenaka Corporation following the suspension of work on a bottling plant project on the island.

The plant was initiated under the previous government as a joint venture between the Hoarafushi Council and Fenaka. The council stated that construction of the facility was nearing completion when the project was halted. According to the council, Fenaka had previously assured that the plant would be operational by the following month.

In a statement, the council said that Fenaka’s decision to suspend the project was in breach of the agreement signed with the council. The statement also noted that employment contracts of staff hired for the bottling plant had been terminated and the workers dismissed.

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) issued a separate statement condemning the move. The MDP called for the immediate resumption of the bottling plant project and reinstatement of the employees whose contracts were cancelled.

In a related development, the HDh. Kulhudhuffushi Council has also decided to take legal action against Fenaka for refusing to enter into an agreement to provide electricity services on the island.
