Addu Mayor Ali Nizaar has criticised the government for its handling of the ongoing electricity issues in the region, stating that there appears to be no clear intention to resolve the problem.

The comments were made following another power outage in Addu today. In a post shared on the social media platform X on Monday, Mayor Nizaar described the electricity disruptions as a major concern for the city’s residents.

He stated that power is being cut off across various areas in Addu on an hourly basis. According to Nizaar, the outages have caused disruptions to businesses and public services, with private property also affected. He added that the Addu City Council office itself experienced two outages during working hours today.

Referring to last June’s five-hour blackout in Malé and Hulhumalé, Nizaar recalled President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s remarks at the time, when the president labelled the incident a disaster and pledged prompt action.

Nizaar said, “It is unacceptable to treat the people of Addu as a secondary priority,” and added, “The electricity situation in Addu has remained unresolved for nearly two years. I do not believe the government has any genuine intention to address the issue.”

The statement comes amid growing public complaints over service interruptions in the southern city.
