As of the second quarter of this year, 170 companies have not paid their Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST) and green tax, according to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).

MIRA released the list of non-compliant companies on Thursday, as part of the regulation that requires public disclosure of companies that fail to file and pay their tax returns. The list includes companies with unpaid TGST and green tax exceeding MVR 100,000.

Among the companies listed are well-known guesthouses and tourism guest shops that have previously appeared on lists of tax evaders.

The list was published after MIRA had issued repeated reminders, notices, and extensions to settle the outstanding amounts. According to MIRA, the process included:

  • An automatic reminder call 7 days before the tax payment deadline.

  • SMS reminders 3 days before the deadline and again 3 days after the deadline.

  • A first notice sent 10 days after the deadline.

  • A final notice sent 30 days later, warning of further enforcement actions.

MIRA has offered companies the option to arrange payment in instalments if they cannot settle their dues in a single payment during these periods. The authority has assured that no further enforcement actions will be taken if a payment agreement is reached and adhered to.

MIRA also stated that it does not disclose the names of companies that provide documents showing that the unpaid taxes are due to outstanding payments owed by the state.
