The Bank of Maldives (BML) has established ATM services in every inhabited island of Baa Atoll.

President Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the services during a ceremony held in B. Maalhos on Thursday.

Speaking at the event, BML Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Shareef said that more than half of the islands now equipped with ATMs had not previously had such services in the past 25 years.

According to Shareef, ATMs have been installed in 47 islands so far this year under an initiative launched in November last year. The bank has completed coverage in all inhabited islands of seven atolls: Dhaalu, Haa Alif, Shaviyani, Noonu, Meemu, Kaafu, and Baa.

ATM services are currently being introduced in 23 islands across five more atolls, with the remaining 33 islands in those atolls expected to receive services in the coming months.

“The ATM service is one of the most complete ways of providing basic banking access to every island in the country. The demand is clear from the number of transactions and the queues at each location,” Shareef said.

He added that the bank’s digital banking services have eased transactions for customers, noting that 99.7% of BML’s transactions are now conducted digitally.
