Maldivian Airlines and the Hajj Corporation on Monday signed an agreement to transport pilgrims from the Maldives for the Hajj pilgrimage.
This marks the first time that Maldivian Airlines will operate flights to Hajj, further strengthening the country’s national airline’s role in international religious travel.
The agreement was formalised in a special signing ceremony held Monday at the Islamic Centre. Representing the two organisations, the agreement was signed by Hajj Corporation’s Managing Director, Mohamed Shakeel, and Maldivian Airlines’ Director, Ibrahim Iyas.
Under this agreement, Maldivian Airlines will be responsible for transporting 50 percent of the Maldivian pilgrims traveling for Hajj this year.
This milestone comes at a time of expansion for Maldivian Airlines, which recently leased an Airbus A330, adding to its growing fleet. The Airbus A330, with a seating capacity of 264 passengers, has begun operating flights to China.
With this addition, Maldivian Airlines now operates a fleet of 25 aircraft, further enhancing its capability to manage long-haul international flights, including those for Hajj.
