Manta Air faces long delay in approval for Maafaru flights
Maumoon noted that increased competition in air travel could lead to greater efficiency within Maldivian, the national carrier.
Manta Air has applied to Island Aviation Services (IAS) for approval to commence flights to N. Maafaru Airport but has raised concerns over delays in obtaining the necessary permission.
Ahmed Maumoon, Deputy CEO of Manta Air, stated that demand from the public, resort operators, and guesthouse businesses in the region prompted the airline to initiate plans for scheduled flights to Maafaru Airport last year. The application was submitted to IAS, which manages the airport, in early December.
"We are addressing this matter daily and have also brought it to the attention of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation. However, we have not yet received a response. The delay affects the community and tourism investors in the region," Maumoon said.
Maumoon noted that increasing flights to Maafaru Airport could benefit the region's economy by supporting tourism and providing convenience to residents. He added that the lack of scheduled flights has hindered the airport's potential profitability.
IAS Managing Director Ibrahim Iyas explained that Manta Air's request was declined due to space constraints at the airport.
"Manta Air recently requested approval, but the airport's slots were already allocated to private jets, leaving no available space," Iyas said.
Iyas stated that Maafaru Airport's apron and terminal are undergoing expansion to address the current space limitations. Once the work is completed, additional airlines will be able to operate flights to the airport. However, he could not provide a specific timeline for the completion of these projects.
"Manta Air has been informed that flights can begin as soon as slots are available," he added.
Maumoon expressed skepticism regarding IAS's explanation, highlighting that jets regularly land at the airport and that the national airline, Maldivian, already operates flights there.
"In 2023 alone, 98 jets landed at Maafaru Airport. We are requesting approval for ATR operations, which only require a brief turnaround time. Space constraints should not be an issue," Maumoon said.
He emphasised the importance of increasing flights to regional airports to improve accessibility and support local communities. He also noted that increased competition in air travel could lead to greater efficiency within Maldivian, the national carrier.
Manta Air currently operates flights to IAS-managed airports in B. Dharavandhoo and R. Ifuru.
