Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef has stated that the Velana International Airport (VIA) development project will lead to an expansion of services in the coming year.
He made the statement during a flag-raising ceremony held on Saturday to mark the 59th anniversary of VIA.
Speaking at the event, Shareef expressed appreciation to the government for its support in the airport’s development efforts. He noted that ongoing work is focused on enhancing the airport’s infrastructure and operational capacity.
He emphasised the role of airport employees in delivering services and contributing to the national economy, and extended his thanks to the staff for their continued efforts.
Shareef also called on staff to ensure services are delivered in a manner that meets passenger expectations.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, a friendship march was held at the airport. Additional events planned include a handball tournament and a staff gala night.
The new passenger terminal at VIA is scheduled to open in the middle of this year. The 72,000-sqft terminal is designed to handle up to seven million passengers annually and is expected to ease congestion at the airport.
