State Trading Organisation (STO) will convert its closed Smart Store in Hulhumale’ Phase 1 into a pharmacy, with plans to open the outlet within the next two weeks.
STO Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim confirmed the development during the company’s annual general meeting held at Nasandhura Hotel on Saturday.
The Smart Store, introduced in 2023 as the first artificial intelligence-based retail outlet in the Maldives, has remained closed since Ramadan.
Shimad stated that the decision to convert the store into a pharmacy was made following complaints from the public regarding the lack of pharmacy services near the Hulhumale Hospital. He noted that while the new pharmacy will operate from the Smart Store site, the existing pharmacy near the hospital will continue its services.
In addition, STO is planning to establish another pharmacy in Hulhumale Phase 2.
The Smart Store in Phase 1 was originally opened as a retail concept and later closed, leaving both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of Hulhumale without a functioning retail outlet.
