Kaani Hotels to build 250-bed city hotel in Ukulhas

Construction of the 10-storey hotel is expected to begin next month.

Kaani Hotels, which owns the largest city hotel in K. Maafushi, on Thursday signed an agreement with the island council to build a 250-bed city hotel in AA. Ukulhas island.

An agreement was signed between the island council and Kaani Hotels to hand over 7,808 square feet of land from Ukulhas beachfront to Kaani Hotels. 

  • Ukulhas Council's vice president Shaukat Ibrahim signed the agreement

  • Kaani Hotels' CEO and president of the National Hotel and Guest House Association Abdulla Nasheed signed the agreement

Shaukat said that Kaani Hotels was awarded the contract to build a city hotel in Ukulhas after winning an open bid, where local tourism is already well established. Giving details of the project, he said:

  • Kaani has now paid MVR 1.1 million as acquisition fee to the council

  • Kaani will pay MVR 160,000 per month as land rent to the council

  • Kaani will spend around MVR 300,000 annually on CSR activities

  • The city hotel is planned to be completed within two years 

Shaukat said a successful business in local tourism in the Maldives investing in Ukulhas is a great honour, joy and heralds development for the island. The increase in the number of tourist beds in the village year after year is a major development for the island, he said.

"This will give a boost to the existing local tourism by creating more business in the island," Shaukat said.

Ukulhas and tourism:

  • 33 guesthouses 

  • 680 tourist beds 

  • The third highest TGST payer in the country

Construction of the 10-storey hotel is expected to begin next month.

Kani Hotels is the largest city hotel business in Maafushi, which has the largest local tourism expansion in the country. The company operates five guesthouses in Maafushi. The company, which started its tourism business in 2008, now has 495 tourist beds operating.
