State Trading Organisation (STO) on Tuesday announced plans to import a shipment of onions to address the current increase in prices and shortage in the local market.
The decision comes following a disruption in regular onion imports due to adverse weather conditions, which has affected the usual weekly supply by private traders. As a result, the price of onions per kilogram has risen in the Maldives.
STO stated that arrangements are underway to bring in onions to help stabilise market prices and manage the shortage. Although STO primarily imports essential food items such as onions, eggs, and garlic during Ramadan, it also intervenes when there are disruptions in supply or price fluctuations.
“We are bringing this shipment to stabilise prices and alleviate the shortage,” a STO official said, adding that a specific date for the arrival has not yet been confirmed.
The official also noted that another shipment of onions imported by a public entity has already reached the port. However, it may take additional time for clearance, and a definite timeline for availability in the market remains uncertain.
