President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has directed the State Trading Organisation (STO) to begin bulk imports of staple food items, fruits and vegetables commonly consumed in the Maldives.
The decision, taken in consultation with the Cabinet, was announced by the President in a post on X on Wednesday evening.
According to the announcement, STO will import rice, sugar, and flour, along with dhal, eggs and onions. In addition, 10 varieties of fruits and 10 varieties of vegetables will be imported in bulk for sale in the local market.
The President said the move is part of the government’s policy to strengthen food security, a commitment included in his manifesto.
STO is expected to release further details of the initiative in the coming days.
