The Ministry of Agriculture has launched a programme to increase banana production in the Maldives by 50 per cent by 2028.
The initiative is intended to strengthen domestic production and reduce reliance on imports. The ministry said banana imports have been rising each year and the goal is to reduce imports by 25 per cent over the same period.
Women’s development committees are being invited to participate in the scheme. Interested committees must submit detailed plans to the ministry, including:

A work schedule,

Information on suitable areas for planting 500 banana plants, with size and charted maps,

A plantation management plan.
Funding will be provided by the ministry, which will also supply fertiliser and technical support.
As part of the programme, special residential areas will be designated for banana cultivation. The tissue culture laboratory at the National Laboratory Facility in Fuvahmulah will produce banana seedlings, which will be offered to farmers at low cost.
The ministry has asked women’s development committees wishing to join the scheme to submit their plans before 2 p.m. on the 25th of this month.
