Islamic Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed on Wednesday told Parliament that he now supports the Maldives Hajj Corporation engaging in halal tourism ventures to generate revenue.

The minister’s comments mark a shift from his earlier position, after he had previously stated in an interview with Mihaaru newspaper that he did not support the corporation’s involvement in tourism-related business.

The Hajj Corporation has announced plans to build a city hotel in K. Maafushi and invest in halal tourism. Following the announcement, Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) requested that the minister be brought before Parliament to explain whether any action had been taken to prevent the project.

Appearing before Parliament, Minister Shaheem clarified that the Ministry of Islamic Affairs does not play a role in the corporation’s internal business decisions. He said that it is essential for funds collected for Hajj services to be invested in ways permitted under Islamic Sharia.

“It is important that the money paid for Hajj is invested in a manner that aligns with Islamic principles,” he said. “Investments by the Hajj Corporation should be beyond doubt, as Hajj is a sacred act of worship. The funds used for it must remain pure.”

Dr Shaheem added that the Hajj Corporation could collaborate with other Islamic institutions, either in the Maldives or abroad, to invest in halal tourism.

“Halal tourism must be conducted in an environment that reflects Islamic culture and within a framework based on Shariah rules,” he said. “These considerations should guide any such investment.”

The minister also criticised the previous government for not including a representative from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs on the Hajj Corporation’s board. He said the ministry should have a role in the corporation’s decision-making process and urged Parliament to establish a Hajj Corporation Act to provide a clear legal framework for its operations.
