Cruise ships back in Maldives; 12 confirmed for new year

A number of cruise ships have started arriving in the Maldives for New Year holidays after a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19.

The second cruise ship that arrived in the Maldives after Covid-19 docked near Male on Sunday. The MS Seven Seas Explorer ship has a capacity of 750 people.

An official from Antrack Maldives, the Maldivian agent of the ship, told Atoll Times on Sunday:

  • The cruise ship is scheduled to leave Male Monday evening

  • Some of the tourists on the cruise ship will disembark and visit sites in the capital

  • A large number of cruise ships are expected to arrive in the country in the near future

"Another cruise ship is expected to arrive on December 17. There are a large number of cruise ships that have been confirmed to arrive in the new year," the official said.

He added that 12 cruise ships were scheduled to arrive in the country and bookings have already been made.

"This will be the first time that cruises will come to the Maldives in such a large number after Covid," the official said.

The government has set a target of bringing 1.6 million tourists to the Maldives this year. So far, 1.5 million tourists have arrived in the country.
