The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) said on Saturday that 74.6 per cent of the dredging work for Hulhumalé Phase III has been completed.

According to MACL, the unreclaimed areas of Hulhumalé Phase III are being dredged by a subsidiary of the company. A total of 47 hectares have been dredged so far, accounting for 74.6 per cent of the overall scope of work.

MACL said two dredgers are currently operating in the area.

Mohamed Muizzu said last month that the dredging work for Hulhumalé Phase III is expected to be completed within this year. He also stated that by March or April next year, all land required for housing development in the Malé region would be dredged.

The dredging of Hulhumalé Phase III began after revisions were made to the Hulhumalé Master Plan. Under the earlier plan, an international cruise terminal was to be developed on the western side of Hulhumalé Phase II. The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) had previously stated that several companies with relevant experience had expressed interest when bids were announced for the terminal.

Following a change in government policy, the master plan was revised, and a decision was taken to dredge the remaining areas instead. Since taking office, the current administration has revised the master plan for Hulhumalé Phase III through HDC.
