Orange prices hike amid supply shortage in local markets
At the Malé and Hulhumalé local markets, some stalls are selling oranges at MVR 10 per piece, while others have reported running out of stock.

Retailers in Malé and Hulhumalé are reporting a shortage of oranges, with stocks depleted in many shops and local market stalls.
Before the start of Ramadan, oranges were sold at prices ranging from MVR 5 to MVR 7 per piece. Since the beginning of the fasting month, prices have increased to between MVR 7 and MVR 10 at several outlets.
At State Trading Organisation, oranges are currently priced at MVR 40 per kilogram, which works out at about MVR 6 per fruit. At SJ Mall, the price is MVR 60 per kilogram, placing the cost of a single orange at more than MVR 8. Redwave outlets are selling oranges at MVR 8 each.
At the Malé and Hulhumalé local markets, some stalls are selling oranges at MVR 10 per piece, while others have reported running out of stock.
A vendor at the Hulhumalé local market said wholesale prices have also increased. “At the start of Ramadan, a case of oranges was available at MVR 850. Today, the price has risen to MVR 950 per case,” the vendor said.
