Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has revised its overtime payment policy for the month of Ramadan following criticism from employees and the public.

Ahead of the start of Ramadan, MACL issued a circular stating that employees would be eligible for overtime payments only if they worked more than 48 hours during Ramadan and the first seven days of Shawwal. The policy drew criticism over its application during the fasting month.

Under the initial circular, employees on duty were required to follow departmental duty rosters. Overtime payments were to be made only if duty staff worked more than 48 hours during Ramadan. The circular also stated that duty employees were required to spend more than five hours per day at work.

Following the criticism, MACL revised the policy, removing the requirement to complete 48 hours before becoming eligible for overtime during Ramadan. Under the revised arrangement, overtime will now be calculated based on work exceeding five hours.

In a new circular issued to staff, MACL also stated that the last 10 days of Ramadan will be treated as holidays for employees in non-shift duty positions. However, the company noted that some employees may still be required to attend the office due to work requirements. In such cases, employees will be paid a half-pay allowance in accordance with company regulations.
