MACL chief says some staff work from home, no exact figure given

The comments follow the circulation of a list alleging that some MACL employees receive salaries without reporting to work or carrying out duties.

Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, said on Monday that some employees are working from home, but he could not provide an exact figure.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists outside the President’s Office following a press conference by President Mohamed Muizzu.

The comments follow the circulation of a list alleging that some MACL employees receive salaries without reporting to work or carrying out duties.

Shareef said MACL is a large company whose operations have expanded, resulting in growth in staffing levels.

“We are currently working on right-sizing the company as instructed by the Ministry of Finance and the PCB,” he said, referring to the Privatisation and Corporatisation Board.

He said the company employs more than 5,000 people and confirmed that this figure includes staff working remotely. However, he said he could not specify the exact number or their roles.

Shareef also said the company is reviewing its workforce under a Strategic Action Plan, but he was unable to state how many positions may be cut.

Last week, President Muizzu said allegations regarding a list of political appointees at MACL had not been brought to his attention.

Asked again on Monday, the President said he had instructed officials to examine the matter and that there were no further updates.

MACL operates Velana International Airport and other airports in the Maldives. The company also has a subsidiary involved in land reclamation projects.
