President says no knowledge of political appointments at MACL
The remarks follow the circulation of a list on social media claiming that around 85 political appointees were hired by MACL.
President Mohamed Muizzu has denied allegations that a large number of political staff were recruited to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) at high salaries, stating that he has no knowledge of such activity.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office on Monday, the President said no information or list regarding the alleged appointments had been brought to his attention.
The remarks follow the circulation of a list on social media claiming that around 85 political appointees were hired by MACL, with salaries ranging from MVR 20,000 to MVR 40,000. The claims also allege that some individuals are receiving salaries without performing assigned duties.
The President said instructions have already been issued to reduce the workforce across state-owned enterprises (SOEs), including the removal of staff deemed unnecessary or recruited outside established procedures.
“I have not received any information regarding these allegations. Similarly, I have not received any list concerning MACL appointments,” he said.
Muizzu also addressed claims related to the Malé taxi application launched by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). He said his information indicates that the application is facing technical issues and that the Ministry of Transport has been instructed to address them.
The President stated that unlawful practices or actions outside established regulations would not be permitted.
He reiterated that future recruitment to state-owned companies will be conducted through public advertisement and evaluation of qualifications and experience. He added that instructions have been issued to terminate staff recruited through improper channels.
The President said recent election outcomes reflect public views on political hiring practices and stated that the government will act in line with those views.
Concerns regarding recruitment of political staff have been raised in previous administrations and have been a subject of public discussion.
