Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam said on Wednesday that subsidised fuel for fishermen will be made available from nine additional locations across the Maldives.

The announcement follows concerns raised by fishermen over access to discounted fuel, including limited supply and availability at only a small number of outlets.

The government has maintained existing fuel prices for the fishing sector despite rising global costs linked to international conflicts.

Previously, subsidised fuel was available from four locations: Felivaru, Addu City, Kooddoo and Hulhumalé Jetty.

Speaking at a press briefing at the President’s Office, Shiyam said the programme had now been expanded. According to a list previously published by the Ministry, the new supply points are:

  • HA. Ihavandhoo

  • HDh. Hanimaadhoo

  • Sh. Milandhoo

  • B. Eydhafushi

  • F. Nilandhoo

  • K. Himmafushi

  • R. Dhuvaafaru

  • Dh. Kudahuvadhoo

  • Fuvahmulah City

With the expansion, subsidised fuel is now available from 13 locations nationwide.

Shiyam said fishing activity is currently concentrated in Laamu Atoll, Thaa Atoll and Meemu Atoll, and added that further arrangements for those areas were expected within the week.

He also said catches had improved after a period of low landings.

According to the Minister, more than 200 tonnes of fish were weighed at Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company during the past week.

He said the government’s objective was to ensure that all licensed fishing vessels have access to fuel at affordable rates so operations can continue.
