Bangladeshi group arrested with MVR 3.8 million in foreign currency

Police have arrested a group of Bangladeshi nationals who allegedly attempted to leave the Maldives with foreign currency worth more than MVR 3.8 million.
Police said the arrests were made on Friday as part of an operation targeting people suspected of conducting unauthorised foreign currency transactions.
According to police, the group was found carrying currencies from 18 countries when they were searched.
The money included more than USD 174,000, EUR 57,000 and GBP 1,800, in addition to several other currencies.
Police said the combined value of the seized currencies exceeded MVR 3.8 million.
All members of the group are now in police custody. The foreign currency has also been seized as evidence for the investigation.
Police have recently been conducting operations targeting individuals suspected of trading foreign currency outside authorised channels.
A number of Bangladeshi nationals have been detained in connection with such cases.
