President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Tuesday that he has full confidence in Chairman Mohamed Rasheed and Managing Director Ahmed Saeed of Fenaka Corporation.
President Solih’s comments come a week after Deputy Managing Director Ibrahim Waheed resigned, accusing the chairman and managing director of corruption. Waheed accused Rasheed and Saeed of running the state-owned utilities company as their private business.
Speaking at a ceremony held Tuesday afternoon in HA. Utheemu to inaugurate the island's new powerhouse and office building, President Solih praised Fenaka, which was the contractor of the Utheemu powerhouse project. He said that Fenaka works diligently to provide the services required by the people.
"The MD, chairman and employees of Fenaka have the full faith of the people. The government has full confidence in Fenaka and MD Saeed too, and we have a close relationship with Maad… There is no doubt about their commitment," said the president.
"We have complete assurance that Fenaka will find out the best methods to provide the best services to the people, and ensure that their work will bring in revenue for the government and services for the people."
Waheed in his resignation letter made several corruption allegations against Rasheed and Saeed:
-
Supply bills are paid only for businesses associated with Saeed; other businesses are not paid.
-
Saeed and Rasheed conduct many businesses for their own benefit outside the business objectives of Fenaka, and because of this, many small and infant enterprises suffer.
-
State institutions have been instructing Saeed to change the company's policies so that room for the repeated acts of corruption and abuse of power can be repealed.
-
Rasheed is using the board of the company to hide the corruption within, instead of heeding governmental instructions.
Saeed had earlier denied the allegations.
Utheemu previously had a 24-year-old powerhouse. The new powerhouse built by Fenaka under a MVR 7.3 million project is located far away from the residential area, and the powerhouse will be powered by four 600 kW generator sets.
