MDP and the allied parties have included in their manifesto the development of a convention island capable of hosting major conferences in the Male region and the establishment of a campus of a renowned foreign hospitality school.

The fifth and final part of the manifesto for a second term for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was launched at the MDP's Zamaanakun Ai Zamaanekey campaign event held at the Social Centre in Male on Thursday evening.

The last part of the manifesto includes a separate chapter titled Tourism for All, to promote tourism. One of the things that the MDP government will do in their second term to promote tourism is to develop a convention island to host major world-class conferences.

The convention island is planned to be developed in the Male region, and is set to include an entertainment complex.

In addition, this section includes various measures to put Maldivians at the forefront of the tourism industry. It includes the establishment of a campus of a world-renowned hospitality school to provide skills and education to the industry and build capable people for senior positions.

Other initiatives included in the Tourism for All section of the MDP manifesto are:

  • Provide technical and financial support for the development of world-class Maldivian hospitality management brands

  • Introduce an investment fund to increase local ownership share in the tourism industry and provide capital for local businesses to invest to keep pace with large foreign businesses; the fund will also invest in the development of liveaboard and guesthouse businesses

  • Facilitate government-mediated investments to increase bed capacity in areas including international airports for sustainable international flight operations in the north and south of the country

  • Making the north and south of the country distinct destinations marketed under distinct branding; introduce new tourism products and prioritise attracting tourists from new markets

  • Connecting island tourism operators with resorts, providing more opportunities for small businesses and facilitating the development of the rural economy

  • Construction of a centre with modern facilities to showcase the history, life and monuments of Maldives

  • Establishment of cruise terminals and other service facilities in the north, south and Male region to provide the services required by the world's major cruise lines

  • Identify a specific area of Maldives to expand Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism

  • Introduce special housing schemes for tourism industry workers and ensure easy access to social and economic opportunities such as specialised schools

  • Provide tourism leadership scholarships to 500 Maldivians over five years; the aim is to reserve 50% of the top positions in the resorts for Maldivians
