Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential candidate, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced in his manifesto on Tuesday that civil servants will be able to work from home for the last 10 days of the fasting month of Ramadan.

The president launched the fourth part of the MDP and allied parties' manifesto on good governance on Tuesday evening.

As part of the good governance policy announced at a rally held in B. Dharavandhoo, government employees will be able to work from home during the last 10 days of Ramadan as many people will be engaged in night worship.

In addition, the manifesto will amend relevant laws to allow flexible and remote working in public agencies without attending work as usual due to the nature of work and special circumstances.

Changes in the civil service are also among the promises made by the president:

  • The law should be amended to transform civil service into an efficient system that can rapidly implement the policies of the executive branch and to transform the regulatory system of the civil service into a system on flexible bases shaped by modern administration

The president's manifesto also includes additional measures under the section 'Strengthening Governance and Accountability'.

Some of these are:

  • Amend the constitution to make necessary changes to the composition of the parliament and to change the number of members every five years

  • Expand the range of services available through One-Gov portal and make services provided by all government agencies available to the public through this online portal

  • Establish a modern framework to eliminate the gaps in the operation of the state institutions and enable the institutions to operate with operational independence

  • The Employment Act will be transformed into a flexible basis that fully protects the rights of workers and employers, incorporating improvements in management systems

  • Establish equal pay standards under the pay harmonisation policy and make necessary improvements in wages

  • Identify independent agencies that overlap in jurisdiction or perform the same functions, review their jurisdiction and make necessary changes to their functioning in a manner that will achieve their objective

  • Establish a system to assess the quality of services provided by public agencies including citizen participation
