PPM-PNC presidential candidate Dr Mohamed Muizz on Tuesday pledged to build an airport in the lagoon of AA. Mathiveri.

Muizz, who is contesting the September 9 presidential election, is traveling to the islands of Alif Alif Atoll to campaign.

"One of the most important things that is needed is to build an airport in this region. Therefore, we will build an airport in this lagoon," he said.

Muizz said that although Ari Atoll is among the tourism hotspots in the Maldives, tourism still needs to be expanded in the region. His government will prioritise providing more tourism related opportunities in the region, he said.

Noting that there is a shortage of land in the island, Muizz said land reclamation for the airport development will add land for housing.

Muizz also criticised the incumbent government, saying that most of the projects undertaken by the government are moving at a slow speed or had stalled.

“This government is saying that the projects will not be carried out in a PPM government,” Muizzu, who is also the mayor of Male, said.

"We will not stop any ongoing and signed projects. Clearly, we will not stop. I want to repeat that assurance."
