The Maldives Immigration Department has announced the need to recruit 200 new officers in 2025 to expand services at Velana International Airport (VIA), in preparation for the opening of its new international terminal.

A walk-in interview session was held by the department on Saturday to hire 50 officers. According to the department, nearly 1,000 candidates attended the session.

Assistant Immigration Officer Abdulla Wisham told Atoll Times that the initial batch of officers will be stationed at the new terminal.

“This time, we are recruiting officers for the newly developed terminal. Further recruitment will take place later this year,” he said.

The new international terminal at VIA is expected to be officially opened on 26 July. The terminal is undergoing final preparations, and the building has already been lit at night as part of the airport’s readiness phase.

Construction of the terminal began over a decade ago. The project was initially handed over to the Saudi Binladin Group, with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) subcontracted for the works.

The new terminal has been developed at a cost of USD 350 million (approximately MVR 5.3 billion). Once operational, it will have the capacity to serve 7.5 million passengers annually. It will include 40 departure gates, 38 immigration counters, and aero bridges to facilitate boarding and disembarkation from aircraft.
