Maldives central bank chief appointed IMF-World Bank board chair

This is the first time Maldives will be serving as the Chair of the Board of Governors of the World Bank Group and IMF.

On Friday, at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group Annual Meetings, currently ongoing in Marrakesh, Morocco, the governors of the two institutions selected the Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Ali Hashim as the Chair of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and the IMF, for 2024.

The chair, which is rotated among the five main regions of the IMF, will be held by the Asia Pacific region in 2024.

Ali Hashim was nominated as the Chair by the Executive Directors representing the Asia Pacific region on the World Bank and IMF Board of Executives by unanimous decision.

This is the first time Maldives will be serving as the Chair of the Board of Governors of the World Bank Group and IMF.

“It is a great honor to represent Maldives in the international financial and development arena. This marks a historic moment, as it's the first time in 45 years of Maldives' membership in the World Bank Group and the IMF. I am sincerely grateful to our friends and partners for their trust," Ali Hashim said.

Among the main duties of the appointment would be chairing the 2024 Annual Meetings Plenary attended by finance ministers and central bank governors of the IMF and World Bank member countries, the IMF and World Bank staff and management.

At the same time, the Chair of the Boards of Governors will act as the Chair of the Joint Committee on Remuneration of Executive Directors and their Alternates as well as the Chair of the Joint Procedures Committee/Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency Procedures Committee.
