President-elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu has formed an eight-member committee to prepare the budget for next year and the first budget of the new government.

President-elect's office spokesperson Mohamed Firzul Abdullah Haleel said during his daily press conference on Sunday that the number of members of the budget committee formed by the president-elect has been increased to eight.

According to Firzul, the eight members of the budget committee are:

  • Maavashu MP Mohamed Saeed

  • Former vice president and former finance minister Abdulla Jihad

  • Guraidhoo MP Mohamed Gassan Maumoon

  • Former tourism minister Moosa Zameer

  • Former finance minister Ahmed Munawwar

  • Former Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) governor Ahmed Naseer

  • Former State Minister of Economic Affairs Mohamed Luveiz

  • Former board member of Pension Office Abdul Haleem Abdul Lateef

Saeed, one of the PNC deputy leaders who had also served as the economic minister under former President Abdulla Yameen, has been appointed as the chairman of the committee, Firzul said.

The committee began its work last week, he said. Firzul said the budget would be formulated after considering the information gathered by the transitional committees and the 100-day promises of the president-elect. Therefore, the total amount of the first budget of the government has not yet been determined, he said.

The state budget could reach MVR 50 billion next year, the finance ministry said Thursday.

Although the fiscal strategy estimates a budget of MVR 50 billion, the total amount of the budget for next year will be revealed when the ministry presents the budget to parliament before the end of November. The parliament has approved a budget of MVR 42.8 billion for this year.
