The fifth ATR aircraft to join the fleet of the national airline, Maldivian, has departed from Toulouse, France and is currently en route to the Maldives.
The aircraft, an ATR 42-600, has commenced its delivery flight and is scheduled to make stops in Heraklion, Greece, and two other destinations before reaching the Maldives. The airline has not specified the exact date of arrival.
Maldivian currently operates four ATR aircraft. The existing fleet includes:
-
Two ATR 72 aircraft delivered in January 2023
-
One ATR 42 delivered in April 2023
-
One ATR 42 delivered in May 2024
The decision to transition to an ATR fleet was made after the airline’s Dash-8 aircraft aged and became increasingly difficult to maintain. Island Aviation, which operates Maldivian, previously stated that Dash aircraft models had been discontinued and sourcing spare parts had become a challenge.
The expansion of the ATR fleet is part of the airline’s ongoing efforts to update and maintain its operational capacity.
