The first of the fishing support vessels to be added to MIFCO's fleet, 'Jazeera 106', is on its way to Maldives, the company said on Wednesday.

MIFCO said Jazeera 106 left Thailand last Saturday. MIFCO expects the ship to arrive in Maldives on Sunday and reports that the Jazeera 104 and 105 will also be delivered before the end of the year.

According to MIFCO, the Jazeera series vessels can:

  • Freeze up to 60 tons of brine per day

  • Store 200 tons of fish

MIFCO said the three new vessels will allow it to buy an additional 180 tonnes of fish per day. The company aims to provide a major solution to the difficulties encountered during the good fishing seasons in the south and central Maldives.

MIFCO has purchased four vessels this year to alleviate the difficulties encountered in weighing fish. The 'Jazeera 103' was brought to Maldives last April and is still operating in the south. The ship can purchase 120 metric tons of fish per day and store a total of 420 metric tons of fish with refrigeration.

MIFCO has also purchased a vessel of the same capacity as the Jazeera 103 in 2021.

Some of the efforts made to increase MIFCO's capacity during the past five years:

  • A total of six vessels have been added to MIFCO's fleet

  • The freezing capacity of 120 tonnes per shift is being increased to increase the capacity of Kooddoo

  • Thinadhoo Fisheries Complex - 120 tonnes per shift; There will also be a 1,000 tonne cold storage

  • The building structure and all the main machinery have been taken to the Thinadhoo and Kooddoo sites.
