Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) is on par in its efforts to pay off and complete all the outstanding dues to fishermen by Monday.

The Ministry is working to release the outstanding MVR 157 million to the fishermen before Ramadan, as had been promised.

Monday is the first day of Ramadan.

Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam told Atoll Times on Sunday evening that the money will be deposited to the fishermen starting from 7 pm, Sunday.

“We are hoping to complete depositing the money for all the fishermen between Sunday evening and Monday,” he said.

He estimated the amount of money given to fishermen by this government at more than MVR 700 million, including oil and ice issued on credit.

The exact details of the money released to the fishermen will be shared later, he said.

Shiyam has previously said that when President Mohammed Muizzu took over the government, there was about MVR 250 million owed to fishermen.
